Belmont avoids ‘Battle’ sweep with Lady Bruins win
Sports — By Pierce Greenberg, Sports Editor, on January 27, 2010 at 9:02 pmThe Lady Bruins gave Belmont something to hang their hats on in the 2010 Battle of the Boulevard series.
The Belmont womens’ basketball team countered an overtime loss to Lipscomb—and two losses by the men’s team—with a 66-53 win at the Curb Event Center on Wednesday night.
Sophomore forward Haley Nelson and junior guard Shaunda Strayhorn each finished with 16 points.
From the start, the game was reminiscent of the earlier meeting at Lipscomb. In the first half alone, there were six lead changes and five ties. When the dust settled, the teams went into the locker room tied at 23.
But Belmont turned things around in the second half.
Fresh forward Alyssa Visbeen knocked down three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to give the Lady Bruins a 35-30 lead with 10:45 left. From there, Belmont didn’t look back—closing the game on a 37-23 run.
With the win, the Bruins move to 5-6 in Atlantic Sun play.
