UPDATE: Belmont apologizes for registration delays

UPDATE ON THURSDAY:

University officials released a campuswide email Thursday afternoon apologizing for the myBelmont delays attributed to class registration earlier this week.

“While not every technology glitch can be anticipated or immediately remedied, we do apologize for any stress or inconvenience these issues caused,” the email said. “Please know that Belmont employees did everything possible to correct these problems as quickly as possible, and we appreciate your patience this week.”

The university acknowledged the slowed functioning of the myBelmont and BannerWeb systems during the week, but said both systems were built to work with the levels of web traffic registration brings.

“Through extensive research and diligence, Belmont’s ITS and Academic Computing departments dedicated hours working with our off campus vendors to identify and resolve a number of configuration issues that slowed down the registration process,” the email said.

Campus officials are still investigating why myBelmont, the university’s intranet system, crashed minutes after registration opened for seniors, student-athletes and nursing and honors majors Monday morning.

The system was reportedly down for 10 to 15 minutes around 7:15 a.m., said April Hefner, university spokeswomen and co-chair of the myBelmont steering committee. University information technology officials reached out to Campus EAI, the campus portal service they work with, to try to figure out what went wrong. As of 9 a.m., they had received no response, Hefner said.

To register for classes, students typically use the campus portal in place to access BannerWeb. This is the first registration period where myBelmont was used instead of the Belmont Intranet Connection.

Students were sent a campuswide email from the Office of the Registrar 46 minutes after registration opened encouraging them to go to registration.belmont.edu to enroll in classes if they were having issues through myBelmont.

While three days of registration still remain for returning Belmont students, Hefner said Mondays are typically the day with the highest number of registrants. She said between 1500 and 2300 students had registered already.
