Possible sexual assault, abduction reported near Belmont’s campus

Metro Nashville Police responded to a report of a woman being abducted from her Portland Court apartment near Belmont’s campus around 6 a.m. on Monday.

The suspect entered the woman’s apartment sometime between 4 to 5 a.m. and assaulted her, then forced her to drive him to an ATM and withdraw money from her account, then made her drive him to McIver Street and Nolensville Road where he fled on foot, according to the Campus Security alert.

Chief of Campus Security Pat Cunningham could not comment on whether the victim was a Belmont student or not.

Metro Police Public Affairs Manager Don Aaron told the Vision the Sex Crimes Unit is now investigating the crime.

Cunningham said Campus Security is working closely with Metro to stay up-to-date on the crime and the whereabouts of the suspect, who police say is still at large.

“As you know, the safety of our campus is our top priority, and our officers diligently patrol the area 24/7,” Cunningham said. “In addition, through these alerts and our educational programming, we seek to encourage our community to practice their own safety measures, including locking all windows and doors of their residences, walking in groups at night or calling for a patrol officer escort and reporting any suspicious activity.”

The suspect was described as a 6 foot tall black male in his mid 20s with shoulder length dreads, a gray shirt with red stripes on the sleeves, jeans and a red leather jacket.

Cunningham believes the suspect will be captured quickly.

“I’m hopeful the detailed description that’s been provided—along with video surveillance footage from the ATM—will assist Metro Police in quickly capturing this person,” Cunningham said.

This story will be updated as more information is made available.
