Volleyball falls to Morehead State 0-3

Belmont volleyball fell 3-0 to Ohio Valley Conference rival Morehead State in their clash on Friday, leaving the Bruins with an overall record of 0-17.

While some late set surges helped give the team some momentum, the Bruins were unable earn a set victory against the Eagles.

Early in the first set, kills by sophomore Mackenzie LePage and senior Alexa Nichols helped the Bruins keep up with the Eagles, as well as a service ace from freshman Taylor Floyd.
However, the Eagles held a firm lead when Belmont called a time-out at 12-6.

The Eagles came close to winning the set at 24-9, but a late set comeback with serves by sophomore Akia Warrior kept the Bruins in the game longer. After a 5 point comeback, the Eagles won the set at 25-14.

The second set saw the Eagles lead quickly, but the Bruins were able to tie it at 11-11 with a service ace from LePage and kills by Floyd. Despite some kills from senior Maggie Mullins and senior Tori Simmons late in the set, the Bruins lost their second set 25-21.

The Eagles kept their offensive rhythm in the third set, quickly pulling away to 11-3. Sophomore Mary Catherine Ball, Nichols, freshman Carly Mason and Mullins helped the Bruins gain some momentum leading to a timeout called by the Eagles at 20-17. After the timeout, the Bruins struggle to gain back their momentum, and lost the third set 25-19.

Simmons, Mullins and Nichols led the Bruins in kills with six each. Nichols also led the team in blocks with 4 total. Senior Haley Sullivan had the most assists at 13. Warrior earned the most service aces at 2 total.

Belmont will take on Eastern Kentucky in its fifth conference matchup at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the Curb Event Center.
