Convocation on President Trump and music stirs up controversy

Belmont apologized for hosting a convocation event on Wednesday morning that featured an explicit song about President Donald Trump.

Belmont’s official statement, released by the Office of Communications that same day, expressed their disappointment with the event.

“We apologize to anyone who was offended, as today’s event was not reflective of our Christian identity nor of our institutional commitment to civil political discourse.”

The university also said the content was different than what was previously approved, and Belmont does not endorse the event’s messages.

The event, hosted by Dr. Joseph Morgan of Middle Tennessee State University’s School of Music, was advertised on Belmont’s event calendar as a survey of popular music and its relation to the president.

“By employing the concept of earned media, the talk investigates the way that these artists actually assisted the campaign they sought to defeat.”

However, students quickly realized the presentation would be different than advertised.

“Dr. Morgan played inappropriate videos and made inappropriate comments about how Mr. President, Donald Trump, gained popularity in the media,” said Belmont junior Jessica Barna.

“The University feels betrayed by the deception implicit in the actions of the guest speaker,” Belmont said in its statement.

Describing the convocation as as “unprofessional and raunchy,” Barna further explained that Dr. Morgan chuckled as he played a song titled “F**k Donald Trump.”

Other students though, like Belmont sophomore Connor Teske, think people misunderstood the purpose of the event.

“Music and art are and always will be one of the most effective mediums to speak out against oppression, corruption and fascism,” he said.

Dr. Morgan was unable to be reached for comment.
