Women’s soccer holds Georgia to a draw in home opener

After battling through a double overtime game the Belmont women’s soccer team ended its home opener with a 0-0 draw against the University of Georgia.

The game marked the first meeting between the two schools in program history.

Though Georgia dominated offensive play with a total of 20 shots on goal, the Bulldogs failed to put one in the back of the net.

Ultimately the Bulldogs offense was not enough to get past the Bruins aggressive and fast defense. From the first whistle to the final the Bruins held down their backline formation and were quick to react to Bulldog breakaways.

Senior goalkeeper Lily Herman played a crucial role in Belmont’s defensive play, saving a total of eight shots.

Standout center defender Shannon Maitland posed major problems for the Bulldogs offensive line, stopping long balls through midfield and winning hard tackles.

The Bruin’s hard-fought defense was not enough to get them a win but it was enough to protect them from conceding goals on its home turf.

Belmont’s currently stand with a 0-3-1 overall record.

The Bruins will continue its season with its next match against the University of Evansville on Sunday, Sept. 8 at E.S. Rose Park.
