AST Week focuses on giving back to others

The week before midterms, when most students are worried about their own grades, Alpha Sigma Tau was thinking about others, and how to give back.

The sorority celebrated their annual AST Week and held several philanthropic events around campus to benefit Girls Inc., a nonprofit that works with girls with ages ranging from 6 to 18 on handling economic and social barriers.

“We encourage people to follow Girls Inc. on Instagram, so they can be involved in what they’re doing, which is mentorship programs, tutoring and there are spring break and summer camps,” said Tori Gudmundsson, a member of AST.

Their busy week started on Monday, when members gave out free Tiff’s Treats cookies and held a raffle for a Bongo Java gift card at the Beaman Student Life Center. On Wednesday, the sorority hosted Letters of Encouragement, an event wherein students were invited to write an inspirational letter to a woman in their life or a girl at Girls Inc.

“The goal is to get people to come to our table for free cookies so that we can tell them about our philanthropy and hopefully get them to buy a raffle ticket,” said Gudmundsson.

The week ended with a convocation event on Friday featuring former NBA player Shan Foster who spoke on women’s empowerment.

And the week doesn’t end there. On Saturday a spin class at Cyclebar will be open to all students, with all proceeds going toward Girls Inc.

Upperclassmen who wanted to be a part of the AST family were able to join through Continuous Open Bidding (COB), which took place this week, offering a laid-back way to join the sorority.

AST wasn’t the only Greek organization busy this week, as Phi Mu finished COB and had a big/little reveal on Sept. 27 and Phi Kappa Tau had fall recruitment Tuesday through Friday.

The biggest thing coming up for all Greek organizations is Greek Sing, which will take place on Oct. 20 in the Curb Event Center.
