Dean of students John Delony resigns

Belmont’s Associate Provost and Dean of Students Dr. John Delony’s resigned Wednesday after two years serving as dean.

Delony, who had served in those positions since 2018, submitted his resignation December to “pursue a new career opportunity with a private company in the Nashville area,” according to an email from university president Dr. Robert Fisher.

During his tenure, Delony worked with the Provost, students and the Division of Student Affairs to improve students’ learning environment.

In 2018, Delony worked with Provost Dr. Thomas Burns to address concerns about the growing student counseling waitlist. He also worked frequently with the Student Government Association to identify concerns among the student community.

“Dr. Delony set the highest example of exemplary leadership and selfless service in our Belmont community,” said Meghan Hickock student government president.

“His enthusiasm for students, passion for positivity, and humble — yet bold — leadership will leave a lasting impact on our university. The student body is deeply indebted to Dr. Delony for his incredible service to our community, and we wish him the best in his new endeavors.”

Before his resignation, Delony worked with Provost Dr. Thomas Burns and Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness Dr. Paula Gill to restructure the Division of Student Affairs, renaming it and several related departments.

With this new structure, the Division of Student Affairs has become the Division of Student Life, the Division of Student Disability has become the Office of Accessibility and Accommodations and the Office of Student Concerns has become the Office of Student Care and Support.

The reorganization was done to “create a more integrated student experience,” according to the email.

Fisher looks forward to the department changes and wishes Delony the best, he said in his email.

“We wish him and his family God’s richest blessings on this new endeavor.”

While searching for Delony’s replacement, Gill will serve as interim senior leader for the Division of Student Life.
