Belmont softball closes three-game run against Jacksonville State 1-2

Belmont softball opened conference play by hosting three matchups against Jacksonville State University at Rose Park.

The Bruins finished hard-fought battles against the Gamecocks, walking away with one win and two losses from their first conference games of the season.

Historically after this weekend’s 2-1 game victories for Jacksonville State, they are now in the lead with 32-9 victories over Belmont.

Although the matchup might look uneventful on paper with points scored only in the seventh inning, the Bruins built up momentum with senior Alicia Veltri’s solid pitching performance of four strikeouts.

Jacksonville State pitcher senior Reagan Watkins led the way with 10 strikeouts, and her help set the Gamecocks up to score four runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Belmont would score two runs, but it wouldn’t be enough as the final scoreboard read 4-2.

The Bruins were back on the field for a sunny spring day double-header at Rose Park Sunday, continuing conference play against the Gamecocks.

Freshman Alexis Clesi pitched first in the game, she kept it to two hits over four innings.

Senior Autumn McDaniel pitched second, allowing four hits and two runs at the end of the seventh inning.

The teams claimed one point each during the third inning. Jacksonville State took the lead with two points in the top of the sixth inning.

However, Belmont utilized their hits more efficiently this time around. Four runs on five hits were enough as Belmont won 4-3.

The third game, second of the day, versus Jacksonville State, started promising with an early score by Belmont in the second inning. In the fourth inning, three points were collected by the Gamecocks followed by two in the fifth.

Belmont would score one more time in the fifth inning, but despite the effort, Belmont lost 5-2.

The softball women sit with a record of  4-7, 1-2 in OVC play and will battle Lipscomb University in the always intense Battle of the Boulevard on Wednesday.
