A new master's in Media and Entertainment Industries at Belmont promises students professional-level learning and knowledge from the ground up.
The new program is coming to Belmont University and will be offered starting in the fall 2025 semester.
It will be offered in a hybrid format, giving students the flexibility to work remotely while completing coursework to get a master’s degree in as short as a year.
With the choice to emphasize in either music business or content creation, students have control over which direction they take.
“It’s really targeted at working professionals or people that have gotten out in their career and want to choose a new path in media and entertainment,” said Nathan Adam, associate professor of Film, Television and Media Production. “Maybe they have experience in one part of the industry, but they’re wanting to broaden their horizon.”
Students have a fast track to a profession in the entertainment industry without having to backtrack to get an undergraduate degree.
“It sounds really convenient. I think a lot of people in entertainment want to get their masters, but they also want to get into the industry as quickly as they can without wasting time,” said senior Cami Cradock.
In the May residency, the content creation emphasis offers coursework such digital branding, visualization, storytelling and podcasting.
“There’s some coursework at the end which is more hands on, so they can get their hands on the equipment and work with the things that we have available for them to do here,” said David Schreiber, associate dean of Innovation and Student Flourishing for Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business.
There’s also a combined weeklong residency students will participate in this fall and spring so that students can come to Nashville and receive all the benefits of Belmont’s campus.
“There would be actual live classes and meetings during the residencies,” said Adam.
The fall residency will take place in August for students to undergo orientation and familiarize themselves with Belmont before they return in the spring to apply what they learned with Belmont’s equipment and facilities.
“They can capture what we do really well at Belmont, and without having to necessarily move here, they can apply it to where they live and to their lifestyle,” said Schreiber. “People can do this on their own time, while they’re still working full-time, without leaving their families.”
The Curb College worked together with faculty from the college of business to create courses in both the business and creative sides of the entertainment industry.
“The intent there was really to come together as these departments to offer something that was new and innovative, not only for the college but in a way for the industry and college grads who are looking to shift careers,” said Schreiber.
If someone’s looking for a fresh start in the field of entertainment this new program makes it possible to go straight to a master's degree without having to go back for an undergraduate degree.
“As a student, I wish I could take a class in content creation, so it’s cool that you can do that even if you’re not in that world,” said Cradock.
Applications for the master’s in media and entertainment industries program at Belmont University are now open and are being accepted on a rolling basis.
With the career possibilities in content-creation growing, the master's in media and entertainment industries meets its students halfway, teaching them the necessary skills to be effective without putting a pause on their career.
“If people are interested, they need to come and check it out. Come to Belmont, be with one of us, see the facilities, see the people, and envision themselves in that future,” said Adam.
