Belmont junior Kayley Tigges died early Saturday morning following heart surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Belmont President Greg Jones said in an email Monday.

Tigges, who was a double major in psychological science and songwriting, was an active member of campus life as a Bruin Recruiter, Campus Security student worker and soon-to-be Towering Traditions leader.

Above all else, her friends noted her zest for life and kindness towards others as Tigges’ defining traits.

“Without knowing it, she taught me what it means to be a person with a condition that didn’t define her. I think that’s why we connected so much, because we knew what the other person was going through,” said Vaiva Puodziunaite.

“She walked through every day with the sweetest smile and never hesitated to ask me how I’m doing, even if she may have been doing worse. Every time we were together, it would feel like a breath of fresh air.”

Tigges’ close friends were also able to see her radiant personality and sympathize and connect with her on a deep level.

“We saw each other at our bests and worsts, but our love for each other never changed. She supported me, challenged me, and taught me so much about how to be strong, resilient, and a loving person,” said Emily Paige, Tigges’ freshman and sophomore year roommate.

“Being her friend has been one of the greatest joys and honors of my life. Her resilience, strength, and heart will never be replicated, and I can only hope that I can be half of the amazing person she was. I will love and miss her forever.”
