Baseball fell against conference rival Illinois State, losing 2-1 in the home series.
In the first inning, Illinois State hit a home run to take an early 2-0 lead.
The next batter then hit another home run to make it 3-0.
Belmont struggled for their turn offensively, not answering any of the three runs that the redbirds scored in the first inning.
At the top of the third inning, the Redbirds came out swinging, racking up two more home runs and piling on to their lead to make it 6-0.
Belmont still could not answer Illinois State’s hot bats.
The top of the fifth saw the Redbirds extend their lead to 8-0.
But Belmont finally answered back in the bottom of the sixth.
With the bases loaded, third baseman Landon Godsey stepped up to the plate and on his second swing sent a ball to the left side of the field, bringing home two Bruins to make the score 8-2.
Catcher Mike Sprockett flew a ball out to center field, batting in another run.
The seventh inning would close with Belmont making the score 8-5 as the energy of the dugout became ecstatic.
However, after two short three-up, three-down innings, no team would score again and the Redbirds would beat the Bruins in the first game of the weekend 8-5.
The second game also saw the Redbirds get out to a hot start.
By the end of the inning, the Redbirds took the 4-0 lead.
At the bottom of the second, Belmont responded with two runs of its own.
The scoring onslaught continued for the Bruins in the bottom of the third when Ty Allen sent the ball out of right field for his seventh home run of the season for the 5-4 lead.
The Bruins would later continue scoring, especially with Pete Daniel’s offense.
“I had some good swings and have gotten held up and it felt good to get the first one. Hopefully there's a lot more where that came from,” Daniel said.
Both teams would score two more runs, finishing the game with an 11-6 win for Belmont.
The game marks the Bruins first conference win this season.
“It's always good to get off the knot, so to speak, and get that first conference win. You know, we played, we just played better than we did yesterday,” coach Dave Jarvis said. “We didn't feel like we came out yesterday and executed on the mound the way that we're capable of doing. I think offensively, we got off to a very sluggish start yesterday, today, we were able to kind of turn that around and generate good offense.”
The final game of the series started back-and-forth, but the Redbirds ended up pulling away and winning 14-2 by the run-rule.
The Redbirds didn’t explode offensively until the fourth inning.Illinois State piled on in the fourth, scoring 10 runs and forcing two Belmont pitching changes, and finished the inning up 11-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, Barton grounded out but brought in another run for Belmont. It was the Bruins final run of the game.
The Bruins now sit at 9-16, their next game is against Lipscomb University at home Tuesday.
