Belmont men’s basketball was defeated by the Bradley Braves 89-77 Tuesday night.
The loss snaps the Bruins’ 5-game winning streak and extends the Braves’ win streak to four games.
Belmont had the opportunity to take the lead in the Missouri Valley Conference standings with a win.
But instead, Bradley maintains its top position and improves its conference record to 8-1.
Belmont is currently in third place in the conference, trailing just Bradley and Drake.
Bradley’s Christian Davis led all scorers with 19 points, while Carter Whitt led all Bruins with 15.
Whitt also registered a career-high in assists with 11.
The game was tightly competitive through the first half, with neither side exceeding a 7-point lead and it resulted in a 43-43 tie.
However, in just over five minutes into the second half, Bradley had garnered a 9-point lead.
Its lead ballooned up to 16 points with five minutes left in the game and ultimately ended in a 12-point margin of victory for the Braves.
“The lead just crept from two to four to six to eight to ten to twelve to fourteen really fast. We got to be better at withstanding those moments and finding a way to grind out some possessions when the offense isn’t going our way,” said head coach Casey Alexander.
The Bruins shot just 38.2 percent from the field and 29.7 percent from behind the three-point arch.
But the Bruins will have a chance at revenge when they travel to Bradley on Feb. 5.
Belmont’s next game is on the road against rival Murray State on Saturday.
