Belmont Ranked 220th on this Year's U.S. News Ranking

Two years ago, Belmont University’s college ranking dropped significantly.

But there is more to this change than meets the eye.

Belmont’s college ranking on US News was #182 in the 2022-2023 school year before dropping to #236 the following year.

However, it rose 16 spots to #220 this school year.

Although this may point to the quality of academics or student life dropping, other factors play a role in the recent ranking that provides context to the shift.

“Belmont's recent change in ranking isn't a decline, but a shift in how we're categorized. Belmont was previously ranked as a regional university and, as of 2020, is now ranked in the national universities category,” said David Gregory, provost & executive vice president for Academic Excellence, in a statement to the Vision.

“This change reflects our growth as an institution and our expanded doctoral program offerings. The national universities category includes a larger, more prestigious, and more diverse group of institutions.”

There are also flaws with the ranking system, Gregory said.

“U.S. News rankings use very specific data that is often criticized in terms of how it measures various factors, including academic quality, student outcomes, and resources. These rankings don't capture the full breadth of a university's strengths or impact on students,” said Gregory.

The difference between nationally and regionally ranked schools is primarily about the types of degrees offered, not the quality of education, Gregory said.

“Belmont’s national ranking in specific categories for innovation (53), the quality of our undergraduate teaching (21), our learning communities (19), and our first-year experience (36) all demonstrate Belmont’s excellence in key areas that are vital to student success,” he said.

Although Belmont’s university ranking dropped, Belmont continues to aim for a student-focused program.

“Belmont's primary focus is on providing an exceptional educational experience for our students. We continually strive to improve our programs, facilities, and student support services based on our mission and values,” said Gregory.
