Belmont women’s basketball won its first home game of the season in dominating fashion 75-47 against Kennesaw State University Thursday night.

Before tip-off graduate guard Tuti Jones was recognized for being the 35th Belmont basketball player to have 1,000 points in a career.

And this would just be the start of the celebration for the Bruins as they would open the game with a 10-2 run.

The Bruins would continue their offensive execution as the team would score 25 points and take hold of a commanding lead.

Belmont would play suffocating defense, ending the game with 19 steals and blocks, that would push the Owls to the end of the shot clock at times and limit them to six total points in the first quarter.

The Bruins let up a bit in the second quarter as the Owls would attempt to make some kind of headway behind a seven-point quarter from Keyarah Berry, who would end the game with 24 points on the night.

However, this wouldn’t be enough as the Bruins would continue to their offensive output with a 17-point quarter highlighted by eight points from senior forward Kendal Cheesman who would be the Bruins leading scorer on the night with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

“This team is really diverse, and we have a variety of players that can contribute on the floor. So we knew that going into tonight, and we did share that on the court,” said Cheesman.

At the end of the second quarter, the Bruins would lead 42-20, looking poised to get their second straight double-digit victory.

The Owls would come into the second half with some renewed energy behind eight straight points from Berry as they would attempt to find any sort of room to come back into the game.

But the Bruins would match all their makes with their own to keep the game out of reach.

The third and fourth quarters would be highlighted by a couple of Jones and Cheesman threes that would push the Bruins to close out the game.

“Really pleased with a lot of things I saw tonight. I thought a lot of players contributed,” head coach Bart Brooks said.

With the win, the Bruins extended their streak to eight straight home opener victories.

The Bruins will now look to their second home game of the season on Sunday where they will host The Ohio State Buckeyes.
