In a now deleted Facebook post on the Belmont parent’s group, claims about fentanyl-laced delivered food stirred conversations among students and parents on Saturday.
This post was made after an incident on Friday where a Belmont student was harassed at the intersection of Caldwell Avenue and 15th Avenue. The student fled into the Jack C. Massey Center after two men in a black SUV made lewd comments to her and told her to get into their car, Campus Security said in an email.
The Facebook post expanded on this and stated that a student ordered Uber Eats to the library on campus and was harassed by the driver. She fled into the library and campus security told her not to eat the food. The food was tested and came back positive for fentanyl, the post said.
There was an incident at the library, but there was no food laced with fentanyl, said Campus Security Chief Mark Labbe.
“A DoorDash driver harassed a student at the library. He never got out of the vehicle and never chased her towards the library. No one tested anything for fentanyl,” Labbe said.
The post was shared across social media platforms, including the university student-oriented platform, Fizz.
“PLS BE SAFE AND DO YOUR BEST NOT TO ORDER UBER EATS FOR A WHILE. DONT GO ANYWHERE ALONE HELP EACH OTHER PLS,” said one user on the platform.
In an email following the incident on Friday, Campus Security noted the similarity of the events.
They also warned students to travel in groups and be aware of their surroundings.
“These are things happening during the day, on streets alongside Belmont, so we want to get messages out,” Labbe said.
Labbe encouraged parents to trust Campus Security to be transparent and emphasizes the availability of information about criminal behavior on campus, he said.
In December, there were two other incidents involving female students and faculty on campus.
“I want parents to understand the proper channels, to verify things and not create more anxiety and fear,” Labbe said.
