Dr. Margaret Tully, a beloved professor, died Thursday after a battle with leukemia.

Dr. Tully‘s connection to Belmont ran deep. Not only was she a respected professor, she was a graduate of Belmont and her mother is English professor Sue Trout making her death even more difficult for some professors.

“I saw Meg come through Belmont as an undergraduate rockstar and then followed her progress through graduate school to professorship,” said English professor Jason Lovvorn.

Lovvorn and Tully also taught an ILC class together, combining her Women, Comedy and Social Change class with his The Rhetoric of Humor Class

Dr. Tully was a graduate at Belmont in 2011 and returned in 2022 to teach at her alma mater roughly 11 years after she walked across the graduation stage.

“I was so happy when she was hired by Belmont,” Lovvorn said of Dr. Tully.

“Meg was smart, savvy, fearless and caring, and she was quick to laugh and always ready with a smile,” said Lovvorn. “She connected with her students on a level that any good teacher would admire. She will be deeply missed.”

In the classroom, remember her for her humor and her unique method of teaching.

“She was great to have as a professor,” said Belmont alum Kerri Rodger. “She made her class fun and relevant for the students. Her pop culture references were amazing.”

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, there are a number of resources available including the Crisis Talk Hotline 855-274-7471, or on campus resources including Belmont Counseling which can be reached during office hours at 615-460-6856 as well as the TimelyCare app which is available 24/7 to all students.
