Belmont women’s basketball won its second straight game by double digits, Sunday afternoon.

With that win, the women’s team is now 4-1 in conference play and tied for second place in the Missouri Valley Conference.

The MOB was in attendance cheering and supporting the team and giving the team high fives at the end of the game.

But for a conference home game, the attendance was lacking.

According to ESPN, 1,012 people attended Sunday’s home game.

Meanwhile the men’s team’s most recent home game against Southern Illinois had 1,504 people show up and averages 1,625 attendees, according to ESPN.

The women’s team averages 1,053 attendees.

It shouldn’t be this way.

The women’s team deserves a better showing at home.

The team shouldn’t be playing to mostly alumni and the MOB.

The largest crowds they play in front of shouldn’t be at away games.

The team shouldn’t be playing this well to empty seats.

The team deserves to be recognized for its competitive play.

Belmont women’s basketball sits at 9-7 after playing against four top 25 ranked opponents in its first 11 games to open its schedule.

Men’s basketball is 12-5.

The team hasn’t played any ranked opponents.

The women’s team has also placed either first or second in its first two years in the MVC and went 34-6 in that time.

The men’s team has had a record of 26-14 in the past two seasons and has placed fourth in the MVC since joining in the 2022-23 season.

None of this explains why fans are only showing up for one set of winners.

The women’s team has outperformed the men.

The women’s team is balling, and good teams want to play ball with Belmont.

Students should want to show up and play, too.

The ball’s now in the students' court, what are we going to do with it?
