Faculty Senate Discusses New Master's Program and Advertising Program

Strategies for improving admission and the creation of new courses were discussed at the fourth faculty senate meeting of the semester.

Provost David Gregory discussed Belmont’s “lower amount of enrollment” and his meeting with an enrollment task force to improve enrollment.

Belmont will enroll as a member of Niche, an education ranking service meant to increase digital ads, increase the number of students targeted by ads and emails and promote graduate programs.

“What do we need to do to make it tighter to get in, to where it doesn’t appear like our work is not challenging for our students,” said Gregory.

Additionally, the senate approved a catalog and curriculum proposal to create a new course titled Introduction to Cybersecurity - CSC-2080.

Some faculty members expressed concerns with the motion as Cybersecurity Fundamentals, BSA 3310, may overlap with the course.

“I think it’s going to be really difficult for students reading ‘Intro to Cybersecurity’ versus ‘Cybersecurity Fundamentals’  and then reading the two course descriptions to really understand what the difference in two courses are,” said Lora Harding. “How are they supposed to distinguish the focus?”

The motion passed despite two votes in opposition and one abstention.

The senate also passed a motion that created a Master of Science in Computer Science program.

The senate tabled the proposal in the spring due to the authorship of the program proposal and the speed at which it was progressing.

However, the proposal passed with a unanimous vote.

The meeting ended after 13 proposals were introduced to the floor, including new program proposals for a Worship and the Arts major and a Gender Studies minor, among others.

Those proposals will be discussed and voted upon on Oct. 21.
