Faculty Senate Streamlines Class Procedures

In the first meeting of the semester, faculty senate discussed how it's going to run more efficiently.  

Senate president Mark McEntire set the tone for a structured faculty senate year, streamlining how it deals with catalog and curriculum changes allowing it to be more thorough in its decisions.  

In past years, catalog and curriculum meetings occurred during the senate’s second to last meeting of the semester. However, this proved to be difficult when multiple proposals were presented in a limited time frame. 

“By the seventh meeting, we needed to be voting on all of them, and that was sometimes too much time pressure on things,” McEntire said.  

“It’s particularly crucial in April, when we’re doing our final meetings, that we get finished with that task and not leave something hanging.”  

Senate leadership plans to talk about these changes earlier and streamline the role of each committee.  

“This may involve some handbook changes, what each of those stages should be focused on and what they’re doing, so that we can handle and manage such a large number of proposals,” said McEntire.  

Provost David Gregory also gave an update on how Belmont’s new non-discrimination policy will impact employee search committees.  

“We are in the process of starting to look where we can give respective colleges and search committees some guidance if you have a non-Christian candidate,” said Gregory. “We’re developing that criteria.”
