Belmont men’s basketball lost to Furman University 74-76 on a last-second 3-pointer in its second home game of the season.
Graduate student Carter Whitt made his Belmont debut against his former school in front of rowdy Curb Event Center.
The Paladins came out strong, scoring the first points of the game and holding the Bruins to a scoreless two minutes.
Belmont could not find their jive in the first half as Furman took a 10-point lead.
The score at half was 34-42 as the Bruins went to the locker room to recuperate.
Halftime seemed to be just what the Bruins needed.
Belmont came out with a raised intensity and hunger for the net.
Consecutive three pointers and slams led to the Bruins taking the lead 56-55 for the first time with ten minutes remaining in the game.
The Paladins did not let them keep the lead for long though as the game became a close back and forth matchup.
Graduate student Brody Peebles got fouled under the net and made a free throw to give the Bruins a three-point lead with little time remaining.
With 14 seconds left, Belmont earned the bonus and junior Isaiah Walker stepped up to the free throw line.
If Walker nailed both free throws, the Bruins would be up by three.
Instead, Walker missed the shot, and Furman was able to gain control of the rebound and move up the court.
With just two seconds left, the Paladins sunk a three, leaving Belmont scrambling and unable to get a final shot off.
Peebles and Whitt scored a combined 40 points with almost 30 minutes each on the court.
Sophomore Brigham Rogers also held his own and was strong with the ball under the net, recording multiple slams.
“It was a really competitive game, and I love the way we fought. I felt like in the second half, we played with the edge that I want to see,” said head coach Casey Alexander. “But they’re a really good team, and they made one more play than we did, We had our chances.”
The Bruins have the weekend off to get ready for one of the most awaited games of the year, the Battle of the Boulevard.
Belmont will travel down the road to Allen Arena on Tuesday to take on Lipscomb at 7 p.m. CT.
