Belmont’s Women in Entertainment organization hosted a virtual Q&A with comedian Kate Flannery, who has appeared in shows such as “The Office,” “Brooklyn 99” and “Wizards of Waverly Place,” on Wednesday.
The event was planned to bring people together and connect them, said Olivia Cribbs, president and event planner of Belmont’s Women in Entertainment.
Cribbs said she wanted to bring in a successful comedian because the club has brought in physical and virtual speakers before, but none in the comedy realm.
“I really loved the idea of bringing someone from ‘The Office’ since I've seen so many people bond over their love for the show,” Cribbs said.
She offered advice to listeners with some of her most notable advice for people starting out a career as an actor or comedian: “rejection is protection.”
She said that even if you do the exact same thing as someone else, the results may be different for you and that person.
It’s all part of the process.
Flannery also said she was “proud to play the well-defined weirdo” on “The Office,” willing to do physical comedy and doing her own stunt where she was hit by Michael’s car in the famous cold open of the fourth season’s first episode.
Wrapping up the talk, Flannery left the audience with some final thoughts.
She noted that artists, no matter the field, find that their families don’t see value in what they do.
But she encouraged all the artists in the room to not let their family hold them back from finding success.
“Keep your dream sacred. Don’t let your critical family deter you from finding your dreams,” she said.
