New police precinct to come to BU area

Plans are under way for a new Metro police precinct in the Edgehill neighborhood that would serve Belmont, Lipscomb and Vanderbilt universities, along with the Edgehill, 12South, Green Hills, Hillsboro Village and Oak Hill neighborhoods.

While negotiations to secure land in Edgehill are ongoing, Police Chief Steve Anderson says they hope to have the new location open by fall 2012.

The new precinct, dubbed “Midtown Hills,” will help Metro better coordinate with the universities through weekly CompStat meetings.

In the meetings, which already occur at the West Precinct on Charlotte Avenue, campus security officials meet with Metro to discuss crime trends in and around local universities. The plan is to relocate the meetings to Midtown Hills next year.

Jason Rogers, Belmont’s vice president for administration, says Metro did not consult the university about the project but is happy about the plans.

“The increased visibility of patrol cars and the increased police presence will help [deter] crime, “ Rogers said.
