On Beat: Vinny Matyi

Freshman Vinny Matyi is bringing even more music to the music city.

As a high schooler, Matyi started a solo music project called Internet Humor, which has been a driving force in his musical and creative journey for the past few years.

He describes the genre of Internet Humor as a mix of Lofi, psychedelic, electronic and indie.

“It's really just me messing around with cool sounds,” Matyi said. “A lot of the music I write ends up going to that and getting produced with that.”

Matyi has been surrounded by music his whole life.

Both his parents are music lovers with his dad being a DJ in the 90s.

“My dad’s been a pretty big inspiration, he showed me a lot of really important music,” Matyi said. “I remember at a really young age, he would be playing me like old funk tracks, old house tracks, and telling me to try to feel the bass line and sing it back to him. That definitely helped create my ear quite a bit.”

He started taking piano lessons when he was seven years old and then switched over to primarily guitar.

As time has gone on, he’s slowly and steadily added on more instruments, hoping to take up drums next.

Eventually, Matyi moved more towards the production side of music.

“My dad had GarageBand on his iPad, so I'd mess around with that quite a bit, which led to me downloading FL Studios on my iPad, and then getting Ableton on my laptop,” Matyi said. “I would just record my own stuff from then on, just because it was fun to write your own music. That became the outlet.”

He was really drawn to the creativity and potential that comes with production.

“I think it's really cool just to go into another world when you're listening to a song that's produced really well,” Matyi said.

The first album he produced was one with one of his bands, Return Lane, which he produced in his basement.

“I had no idea what I was doing. It sounds a little rough, but you could definitely tell we were pretty passionate about what we were doing and writing some cool songs,” Matyi said.

When it comes to creating music, Matyi works on his own solo project, Internet Humor, as well as with several bands back home.

As Internet Humor, Matyi has released one album, a couple of singles and most recently a self-titled EP.

He said that Internet Humor is the music he is the proudest of.

Matyi collaborated with his fellow musician friends and sampled a lot of their playing for the EP.

His favorite song that he’s released is one that he previously wrote with one of his bands, called “Plastic Paradise,” which he just re-released on his own.

“I'd say that's definitely most representative of my message and what Internet Humor really means,” Matyi said. “I mean, it has a bunch of different meanings, and I'd say the main one is just about being present and just being grateful for everything and not trying to distract yourself.”

“It's just an exciting project that I definitely want to keep up and try to grow,” Matyi said.

Music itself is a huge part of Matyi’s life.

“I love the fact that like, when you hear a really good song with a cool beat, like a cool bass line, it just gets you moving,” Matyi said.

Matyi compares listening to music with eating food.

“Hearing a song, it sounds like a texture. I feel like food and music are really similar, because it’s like you hear a song and it’s like biting into a really good food,” Matyi said. “Like you taste all these different things, but your ear will, I guess, act as your mouth.”

He said he loves exploring various genres of music, unafraid to dabble into something different than the day before.

Matyi said he gives himself a challenge to listen to a brand-new album every day.

“I always just keep an open mind. There's not much I don’t like in music,” Matyi said. “I'm trying to keep that mindset that there's good in just about anything you listen to, or at least something cool to take away from a project, whether you like that genre or not.”

One of Matyi’s favorite listens through this experiment was music by Magdalena Bay.

Because of this habit, he’s evolving his ear and knowledge of music every day.

Through this learning, Matyi said he has a better understanding of the music industry.

“There's different definitions of success, and there's like a million different things to do in this industry, besides being a producer, being an artist or running a record label,” Matyi said. “There's things that you have no idea you could do that are just as cool as that. Keep your mind open to all these different things.”

And for the future, Matyi said big things are on the horizon.

“2025 is going to be a cool year for Internet Humor,” Matyi said. “Lots of cool things are coming.”
