SGA Unanimously Passes First Three Resolutions

Belmont Student Government Association passed resolutions to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, support Sigma Chi and place more period product dispensers during its second general body meeting of the semester.

Belmont celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 and hosts various events in celebration.

The motion was for SGA to celebrate the month and “encourage all students to please participate in Hispanic Heritage Month events,” said Sen. Abigail Daugherty.

The motion passed with a unanimous vote.

SGA also passed its first finance bill of the semester, allocating $2,500 to the Sigma Chi fraternity to help pay for a lodging deposit for their brotherhood retreat.

“All fundraisers done by Sigma Chi are raising money for the chartership process and their philanthropy, so the organization does not have money to fully fund chapter-exclusive activities,” explained Olivia Patterson, SGA treasurer.

Sigma Chi does not plan on asking SGA for money regularly.

“Normally, what we can do is work the Titans events, and that money can go to our chapter,” explained Joseph Patrick, president of Sigma Chi. “But because that money is going to chartership, we can’t do that this semester.”

The motion passed unanimously.

Finally, a bill allocating $341 to implement a period product dispenser in the Janet Ayers Academic Center was introduced.

SGA had motioned to add one in the first-floor women’s restroom last semester, however the contractors mistakenly put it in the Randall and Sadie Baskin Center instead.

The senators discussed how to ensure the dispenser was put in the correct location.

“We could check with the contractor to make sure that it is [placed] in the Janet Ayers Academic Center and not any other building,” said Sen. Sophie O’Brien.

The motion passed unanimously.
