Belmont softball defeated Murray State at home in an 8-0 blowout Tuesday afternoon.

Coming off a strong 4-0 series win against Drake, The Bruins carried that momentum against The Racers.

Belmont started strong with the first two batters reaching base, bringing infielder Nicole Hughes to the plate, who brought them both home with a single.

After another Bruins’ run made it a 3-0 ballgame, the Racers called for a mound visit early.

But it did little to slow the Bruins’ offense down throughout the game.

Belmont pitcher Maya Johnson made her fielders’ jobs easy.

After Murray State’s leadoff hitter reached base on an error, Johnson struck out 8 consecutive Racers.

In the second inning, a stolen base caused a ruckus on the field when the umpire called an obstruction on the throw to second, resulting in the third out for Belmont.

Emily Cockrill picked it back up at the bottom of the third with a home run, causing a chain reaction of base hits from Rylee Spindler, Grace Gressly and Madison Dolecki which extended Belmont’s lead even further.

Four runs were scored in the inning, giving Belmont the 7-0 lead.

Murray State switched their pitcher shortly after the hitting frenzy, creating a stalemate of ground outs, fly outs and strikeouts.

The score remained consistent for almost three full innings until Belmont scored one more run at the bottom of the sixth.

Despite the Racers’ defense towards the end of the game, they only had one runner on base the whole game.

The Bruins are now on a 10-game winning streak and improve to 21-7.

They look to extend the streak on the road at Illinois State this weekend.
