Full of explosive power and heartfelt tunes, “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” rocked the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, leaving audiences wowed.
On Tuesday, Andrew Jackson Hall hummed with excitement as the home state of Tina Turner was about to witness the musical made in celebration of her.
Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, Turner has defined the genres of rock, R&B, and pop for the last 50 years.
Unbeknownst to many though are the struggles and hardships she had to face in creating her legacy.
That is where this musical focuses most of its energy.
Tina Turner's life story, while not conforming to expected narratives of over-the-top glamour, offers profound insights into the realities of celebrity life, including the challenges of job insecurity, the enduring effects of domestic abuse and the pervasive racism embedded within the music industry.
Paris Lewis, who played the titular character, stole the show, not only was she able to replicate the distinct and soulful voice of the late Tina Turner but was also able to communicate a beautiful story of struggle and strength.
The set, while simple, was effective in providing enough space for the action-packed numbers and countless set changes that needed to be made.
The projections also helped with the set's effectiveness as the projected visuals added a consistent sense of movement needed for such a fast-paced show.
The biggest and best surprise of the night was how the set became a rock concert stage, complete with a full band, at the end for Tina to perform iconic songs to a standing ovation as the musical ended.
It is here where she sang “Proud Mary,” a song that, even after 2 hours of music, got the audience on their feet.
The children of the cast Brianna Cameron, Daelyanna Kelly Benson, Symphony King and Natallia Nappo sang their hearts out, making it clear exactly why each one was cast in a national tour and allowed to make their mark in front of an audience of thousands.
“Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” is a powerhouse performance that incorporates all the elements that make Broadway great to tell a story that will be known for years to come.
The iconic and unique voice of Tina Turner is one that has been idolized for generations, and this musical is just another reminder of the beauty and strength that will always live on in her memory.
