In its season opener, Belmont women’s basketball lost 82-56 against the Kansas State Wildcats.
The Bruins opened with a difficult task facing the No. 13 ranked Wildcats on the road.
But they started off with a closely contested first quarter.
Behind a perfect 3-3 shooting quarter from graduate transfer Kendall Holmes, the Bruins ended the first quarter only trailing by three points.
Holmes was also the Bruins leading scorer for the night, closing out with 12 points.
However, the game would begin to slip out of the Bruins’ grasp as Kansas State would showcase why it was so highly touted coming into the season.
The Wildcats both literally and figuratively broke away from the Bruins by pushing the pace and raising the lead from three to 18.
This was largely on the back of a perfect shooting quarter from Temira Poindexter, who was the Wildcats’ leading scorer with 23.
As the Bruins came back from halftime hoping to rebound from their large deficit, they ultimately got a half closer to the second quarter than the first.
The Bruins had trouble getting any offense going as they shot only 30% as a team in the third.
Coupled with the Wildcats continuing their up-tempo offensive onslaught, the Bruins deficit built to 25.
The Bruins were unable to get much of anything going in the fourth and Kansas State ran away with the win in the Bruins’ first non-conference game of the season.
Belmont will look to improve their record as they continue their road stint against Wichita State this Saturday.
