The Women's Soccer team pulled off a 1-0 win over Indiana State last night to advance to the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Semifinals.
The No.4 Bruins took on the No.5 Sycamores in the quarterfinals at E.S. Rose Park and got their first postseason win since 2019.
No shots found the back of the net in the first half as the two teams battled it out on the field.
Graduate goalie Sydney Jones made six crucial saves, recording her seventh shutout of the season.
With the game being single elimination, Belmont took its home field advantage seriously.
In the 64th minute freshman Kaitlyn Elliot had a finish set up by freshmen Teagan Downs and Reagan Ross to put the Bruins on top.
“We talked about before what a privilege it is to be out on the field and being able to play for such an amazing school and be with each other as a team,” said Elliot. “Seeing Reagan right there I was like ‘I have to get in the box.’ I knew she was going to cross it because she didn't really have that angle, and she crossed it perfectly and it was just an easy tap in.”
Belmont was able to hold on to its narrow lead and clinch its first MVC tournament win since joining the conference in 2022.
“I’m really impressed because we are young, just the mentality and the way we have grown this season. We had a tough non-conference and that really prepared us for a lot of things,” said head coach Kelsey Cameron. “What has made us so good this year in conference is just the freedom we have been playing with.”
The team travels to No.1 Missouri State on Thursday for the MVC Championship Semifinals.
Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CT and can be streamed on ESPN+.
